2023

I haven’t really fretted over new year’s resolutions in some time. This isn’t because I think I’m too cool for them or find them silly or anything else, but simply because I never had much luck with them. My successful life changes have come on their (my) own time.

I am, however, trying to approach 2023 thoughtfully.

The most important thing I learned (or maybe the most important thing I fully realized) in 2022 is how little we control. Of course, we direct our lives as best we can in terms of our home, our work, our associations, and so forth. But day to day—minute to minute—the only thing we really, fully control is our reaction.

That scared me for a bit, but the fear faded and eventually became relief.

Mostly, we don’t direct the big things in our lives day to day. But we choose our reaction again and again.

For 2023 I earnestly endeavor to appreciate the power and the frequency of those choices.
