Washington Redskins name, logo out; is POTUS a factor?

The organization made the announcement today. No word what the new name will be yet, though I admit I liked Bravehearts when that got kicked up several years ago. Probably even that is too far now.

Mostly I say “whatever.” I don’t care. I think it might have bothered me more ten years ago. FedEx, who has the naming rights for the Washington NFL stadium, is driving the change, so even now it’s just a matter of money (though with political correctness as an origin, as more of the aggrieved boycott and what-not).

And never mind that it might be just a tad more complex.

That I know of, our esteemed president hasn’t yet weighed in on this. (He’s too busy retweeting Chuck Woolery’s misinformed pandemic rhetoric.) But it strikes me that the sort of jackass he is feeds this kind of sentiment. This will be like the Confederate battle flag, or the Bubba Wallace investigation. I believe we can reasonably expect Trump to be contrary and antagonistic about it, because if he loves anything, it’s a good ol’ finger-in-the-eye.

That’s a specific kind of price we pay for our presidential selections that no one says much about, that I can see. Lacking a truly exceptional person in the office who can overcome it to some degree—a Ronald Reagan, or perhaps a Franklin Roosevelt—there are a lot of cultural forces that move deliberately contrary to the occupant of the Oval Office. And with an unhinged narcissist like Trump, the effect is enhanced.

I haven’t talked myself into Biden yet. But I haven’t talked myself out of him either.
