Our Upward basketball and cheer practices are starting at church this week. I’m glad for that.

I’m directing the Upward program at our church this year. Our boys have played for six years, and this is my fifth year coaching. It’s important to me. It’s one of my favorite things in the world. I think it’s a wonderful way to talk about Jesus and Christlike behavior with young people, and it’s a powerful outreach ministry for our church.

And directing has, so far, been quite an experience.

I had a boss 15 years ago who would say she had a “personal growth opportunity” for you when she had some crappy job she didn’t want to do that she was going to push off on you. I thought of that phrase when I considered my experience so far.

There are mishaps, crises, and so forth that I handle as well or better than anyone I know. And there are other sorts that are “personal growth opportunities” for me. I’m getting a chance to build some skills of mine that have atrophied, or in some cases weren’t ever there in any significant quantity. That is the approach for which I am striving.

Some of my troubles have been self-inflicted. Others come with the territory. All are opportunities to model behavior for those around me. What choices shall I make?

Sorry I’ve been so long writing. I’ve been very busy working on our church’s Upward program. Even with great volunteers it’s a lot of work, and me having to play through my occasional rookie errors hasn’t helped either. (This is my first year to direct the program.) I’m getting smarter for next year. And, we’re nearly to the fun part.

We started the Star Wars movies last night, because Aaron said he had been too young to remember much about them and he wanted to refresh before seeing Episode VII. He had an interesting question: when Star Wars first came out, did people realize there would be sequels? I can’t remember, but I was 6.

Did you see my review of Beignet Cafe?

Kind of collapsing into Thanksgiving, but I’ll take it.

  • Locals, if you haven’t yet had the heat on, your luck looks likely to run out this weekend.
  • Nathan made second chair horn for concert season. Proud of him for stepping up and doing something different, and proud of him for putting the work in for a good tryout.
  • True confession stemming from a comment on a Kelly Kazek piece this week: I love the Crimson Tide. But I don’t like Rammer Jammer. It’s fun. I have participated. But it’s not very classy.
  • I loved The Wiz. I dug the production design, and the music was great. There’s a live production
of it coming in a couple of weeks. Think I’ll need to catch that.
  • Dad was over for dinner earlier this week and fell in love with Alexa. I think he’s getting an Echo for Christmas now.
  • The 2016 IndyCar schedule is out, and we get an oval in April (the return to Phoenix)! Yay!
  • It looks like my favorite mobile setup right now is carrying my Lumia 830 and my (SIM-less) Fire Phone. I share the 830’s connection, and I can do everything I want to do. It’s a fair bit in my pocket, but it’s manageable. Interesting that I may be the happiest yet carrying neither a tablet nor a keyboard.
