I just barely know who Tucker Carlson is.
I mean, I know he’s one of the best-known talking heads on the red meat right, and I know Fox just fired him, and I know it was unexpected. But I’ve never listened to him for as many as 45 seconds in a row, that I can recall. All of my exposure to him has come from small clips on social media (mostly Twitter).
A little spin around the series of tubes tells me he’ll likely settle into some other rat’s nest quickly and barely miss a beat.
Right, left, or somewhere in between, I don’t have many carnival barker types like Tucker Carlson in my news/opinion diet anymore. I still checked in with Rush maybe weekly for a long time, but stopped doing even that when he went all in on Trump. When he died I mourned him for his consistently substantial contributions to the national dialogue, but I couldn’t say when I last listened to him.
Dana Loesch and I follow each other on Twitter, but I just read her feed periodically. I rarely listen to her show.
That’s it for the agitators. I consume from all over the political spectrum, but most of what I consume is written—and by intelligent, articulate grown-ups. I also usually listen to NPR in the morning for about 20 minutes when I get to work. Guess what? They don’t scream and inflame either.
I am better informed. I am less stressed. I am happier.
