Aborted review: Edwards Lemon Creme Pie

I don’t like any dessert in the world as much as Edwards lemon meringue pie. It has been my favorite for a substantial majority of my life. We have stuck my birthday candles in such a pie more times than I can remember.

They don’t make it anymore.

I noticed a year or two ago that our Publix always seemed to be out of stock, and I discovered it was gone when I went online to ask about it.

They have a “lemon creme pie” now, which we tried this weekend for my birthday celebration. It is pleasant enough, but alas, it is not close to the perfectly flavored and textured flagship lemon meringue pie that we enjoyed for so many years. (I was going to review this product but I got too irritated as I got into the post.)

The inoffensive but markedly inferior product currently standing in for Edwards lemon meringue pie.

(And inevitably, someone will say “try this one” or “try that one” or “here is a recipe for a better one” or similar. I appreciate your thoughts, and while it’s only rarely I’ve tried a lemon pie I didn’t find at least somewhat agreeable, there is no better one than the discontinued Edwards product. My confidence in this assertion is decades in the making and unshakable.)

Edwards, we need you to do the right thing and bring your original lemon meringue pie back. We’re definitely not buying another one of these wan stand-ins.

  1. I really like a good Lemon Meringue Pie. Not a lemon cream pie, not a lemon icebox pie, but a true Lemon Meringue Pie.

I remember “back in the day” there was a Lemon Meringue Pie box mix that had a small yellow bead full of lemony goodness that had to be added to the filling. This was my introduction to the wonderful Lemon Meringue Pie. Sadly, that has also been discontinued.

Sometimes I just settle for some tart shells filled with a good British lemon curd.
