Thursday miscellanea #643

  • I bought some Red Delicious apples yesterday, and wow, was that ever a mistake. These things barely taste like anything. (Apparently they were bred too much for color, and the genes responsible for the “undesirable” yellow stripes on them were also responsible for a lot of the flavor and sweetness.) Back to Gala or Honeycrisp next time.
  • When I was a tot, my dad accidentally ran over his soldering gun with the car. After successfully testing the innards, he put the housing back together around it with heavy duty tape and used it for many more years. I understand and appreciate my dad a bit more with each passing year.
  • Golden Flake hasn’t been Coach Bryant’s Golden Flake in some time, but the closure of the Birmingham facility in July will certainly slam the door, to whatever degree it remains ajar. I’m a bit sentimental about the lost Alabama jobs.
  • My sister and I were texting last week and a couple of memories about Danette came up, so I went to her Facebook page. I was sad to discover she died in February. She was only 60. I wish I’d known. I’d have gone to the funeral. RIP, my friend.
  • Nashville’s IndyCar street race will continue beyond this year, but with a new layout. This was expected news, with Titans stadium construction expected to wipe out much of the existing circuit. I hoped for a move east to Lebanon to Nashville Superspeedway, but that was always a long shot. Here’s hoping the new street layout has better visibility and use of space.
  • Disney has sued Florida governor Ron DeSantis alleging “a targeted campaign of government retaliation.” Good luck with that, Ron. Apart from the mob—like actual Cosa Nostra, Yakuza, or similar—I can’t think of anyone I’d want on my ass less than a Disney legal team.
  • The NFL draft starts tonight. Apparently an Alabama player hasn’t gone first since the late ’40s. Certainly does feel like Bryce Young to the Panthers!
