Alabama’s primaries are March 3

The primaries are next week.

I expected this primary season to be one of the most exciting political times of my life. The 2016 Republican presidential candidate field was packed with good choices. There were three to five folks for whom I’d have pulled the lever without hesitation. As contentious as Trump’s election was, I was certain he would face a robust challenge from within the GOP, and perhaps even lose the nomination. (We almost saw the incumbent lose the nomination in 1980, remember? Mary Jo Kopechne was almost certainly the difference.)

Alas, no. The always-insightful Kimberly Ross had a great piece this week on, among other things, what has happened to all of those #NeverTrumpers. Turns out way too many of them, both in the party and the electorate, just kind of said well, OK.

And here we are. Absent a devastating economic downturn or a truly calamitous foreign policy blunder, Donald Trump will be reelected on November 3. He will have faced no significant GOP opposition, when such should have been fierce. He also will have faced no candidate of any potency from across the aisle. The opportunity for a steady moderate Democratic candidate was such a slow hanger over the plate, it’s absolutely incredible the Democrats didn’t swing at it. James Carville is aware of the problem his party has.

But please, do tell me again what a good use of energy the impeachment of Donald Trump was!

I’ll be voting for Bill Weld for president and Jeff Sessions for Senate on Tuesday. Not sure I’ll mark anything else.

    • The Sessions counterattacks that were airing during the XFL games and the race this weekend show Tuberville complaining about Trump, and this is really a huge zinger the way the ads set it up. So those are just as bad. Nothing matters but Trump.
