Thursday miscellanea #640

  • Had lunch with Alex today, who told me about his (significantly older) boss always challenging himself, both physically and mentally. I need to capture some of that, in just those terms. I need to get in the business of surprising myself. Have I tried that before? I don’t think so. I have, however, demonstrated to myself that I can get results with thin semantic constructions. Hmm.
  • Lea and I have finally engaged with Silent Witness on BritBox by just jumping into a later season that’s in HD. It’s not consistently fantastic, but it is good. We’ll certainly stay with it, and may even build enough affection for it to jump back to earlier season in standard definition.
  • I’ve started planning in earnest for the return of a living room aquarium at my house. Pretty sure I’m going with lots of light, lots of plants, and a small shoal of pearl gouramis as the stars. Had that idea several weeks ago and it’s hanging around. (I’m excited about the LED revolution in aquarium lighting!)
  • The deadline for the North Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force’s human trafficking art contest for middle and high school students is three weeks from tomorrow! That’s plenty of time to get your entry in! Click for more details!
  • I See You, currently on Netflix, isn’t bad but the direction is heavy-handed at times. At least it’s not masturbatorily long, which seems the commonest sin these days. Good to see Helen Hunt, though she’s unfortunately succumbed to the cosmetic surgery temptation.
  • IndyCar is at Texas on Sunday! This is the second-fastest race on the schedule, and we may see trap speeds in the high 220s. It’s on NBC at 11 am on Sunday. NASCAR fans, plenty of time to catch this one before Richmond later in the day. (And see what you’re missing!)
  • I’ve gone occasionally and slightly political with a miscellanea post here and there, but I’ve generally kept it light when I’ve done so, and there’s no effective (or decorous) way to do that and discuss the Nashville school shooting or the loss of a Huntsville police officer in the line of duty. That I haven’t spoken of these things publicly yet doesn’t mean they’re not on my mind. (I also think the level of intelligent discourse on guns in our society is at an all-time low, so there’s that too.) Stay tuned.
