Review: Conecuh Cracked Black Pepper Smoked Sausage

When you are a cultural icon as I am, one thing you must make peace with is the constant attention. And, yes, one thing many people do want to know how, at nearly 52 years old, I maintain my beautiful body so consistently and marvelously.

Well, let me tell you: there’s a fair bit of Conecuh in this svelte physique.

Conecuh Sausage is one of Alabama’s true treasures, and has been so for more than seven decades. There’s a large new store and gift shop—if you’re coming home from the beach on I-65 northbound between 7 am and 5 pm Monday through Saturday, take exit 96 and take the first two rights—but our Publix carries several Conecuh products, and you can also order online here.

Some Conecuh varieties have a dime-sized profile, and some are a more typical dinner sausage size. The new cracked black pepper variety is the latter. Aaron and I had it for race food yesterday, with macaroni and cheese and green beans accompanying.

Now generally I go over ingredient panels when I do food reviews, but I’m not going to do that for this product. It’s sausage, OK? If you’re going to eat sausage, you just eat it because it’s delicious. Besides, most ingredient lists won’t tell you much about sausage’s exact provenance anyway, and isn’t that probably best for everyone?

Guess what? The cracked black pepper variety of Conecuh sausage is indeed a delicious winner. It tastes a lot like Conecuh’s original recipe with black pepper noticeably boosted, and there may be an attendant nudge up on the garlic as well. It’s a bit spicier, but it does stop short of the Conecuh hot and spicy variety. It’s a fine product. Aaron and I ate most of the pound yesterday, and I had the remaining bit with a fried egg this morning. We bought one more pound that I may use in some jambalaya.

Kidding aside, if you’re going to splurge and eat something that’s, uh, let’s say “perhaps not altogether nutritionally sound” once in a while, do it with something that tastes really good. Your body can’t much tell the difference between this and store-brand bologna, but your taste buds can. Make your taste buds happy!
