#IndyCar historian, journalist, pundit, and superfan Robin Miller dead at 71

The IndyCar community—indeed, the auto racing community at large—has lost one of its greatest friends. Robin Miller has succumbed to his leukemia.

There is a fantastic recap of his life at racer.com, and I won’t attempt to summarize it here. I will say Robin endeared himself to so many people because he was genuine. Plainspoken, self-deprecating, and funny, he still wasn’t afraid to ask tough questions in interviews, and his weekly mailbag has been one of my regular reads for years. I will miss that.

I will also miss his ample access to so many IndyCar insiders. Several times Robin’s readership knew something significant was going to happen before it was official, because he had sidled up to the players, gotten the scoop, and tipped just enough of it so we knew what to expect.

Robin and I exchanged email a time or two. Once he answered my question in his column. Another time I had seen a misspelled word during race coverage, and it had survived two weeks of me complaining to NBCSN about it. I emailed Robin and asked him to see about it. “You got it, Bo,” came the near-immediate reply. It was fixed in the next telecast.

God be with his family and friends. Enjoy that checkered flag, man. RIP.
