Thursday miscellanea #602

  • We’re now two for two on Viet House visits, and watch for an expanded review soon.
  • I linked to the first racer.com obituary for Robin Miller in my post yesterday. Today I have to link to Marshall Pruett’s. Oh, my mercy, what a giant we’ve lost. “I’m so incredibly thankful he was able to die as he lived: On the throttle and in charge.”
  • We had a brown Kirby vacuum cleaner when I was a tot. In my memory it weighed 50 pounds or so, though it was probably more like 30. Dad had an angle grinder attachment for it, if you can believe that. I remember being about 6 and going to Oxford with him to order a part for it. The guy said “what model is it?” And my dad said “the loudest one they ever made.” The guy didn’t even smile. He had black slicked-back hair and an unlit Calabash pipe. Funny what I remember.
  • The ZZ Top documentary on Netflix was pretty good, but I don’t think stopping at Eliminator was ideal. Afterburner was a huge (quintuple-platinum) album with four Top 40 hits (one of those a Top 10). Also, “Doubleback” was prominently featured on the Back to the Future Part III soundtrack in 1990. Telling the story to there and then saying “and they keep on rocking” or somesuch would have been better.
  • Lea’s coming home with various unusual Oreos lately. I was more OK with the peanut butter than I thought I would be—kind of a pie vibe. The chocolate hazelnut (“Nutella”) wasn’t awful, but definitely underwhelming. I still like regular Oreos the best, with the mint creme a close second.
  • A cherry 1977 Celica GT Liftback exactly like my first car except for three things—mine had an automatic and air conditioning, and lacked the rear window louvers—just sold on eBay for $13,200. Wow.
  • I went to Barnes & Noble with Aaron last night. Might have been the first time I’ve been in there in ten years. They have a lot more toys and games now. I wouldn’t have bet you could buy a Lego Millennium Falcon or eight different chess sets in there.
