The Indy 500 that wasn’t

In case you haven’t noticed, the COVID-19 pandemic has really screwed up a lot of plans for a lot of people. One that I regret more than most is that Dad, the boys, and I didn’t get to go to our third Indianapolis 500 this year. May 24? No chance.

So they rescheduled the race for August 23. Well, we can’t make August 23. That’s inside both boys’ school years. It’s chafed me a little bit that I wasn’t offered a refund. However, the tickets are good for the event even if postponed. We generally think about such things as running it the next day if it’s rained out, but by the letter of the terms, it also applies to postponing it three months.

(And this is not an inexpensive event to attend. I have $624 in my tickets and parking permit.)

It’s caused me some trepidation to consider selling them. There’s been rumbling about moving the date yet again. What’s the virus going to be doing then? And so forth. I’d about decided I was just going to put them on eBay and gamble.

Well, today the Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced it would run the Indy 500 as scheduled on August 23, but with 50% fans. The deal for current ticket holders is that we can retain half of our tickets guaranteed, or we can keep all of them with the chance that we might be moved.

Or, if you don’t want to go, you can relinquish all of them for IMS credit, good for (among other things) tickets to the 2021 Indianapolis 500. Yes, please! Even better, we also get to keep our seniority, which builds year over year, and that guarantees I’ll be able to purchase these same seats for next year’s event.

Some folks are grousing that there’s not a refund option. I understand that. But we were always planning to go next year, so I’m quite happy with my situation.

  1. I am very curious as to how they will handle our football season tickets. (Of course, I imagine there won’t be fans at games and they will just roll this year over into next, which is fine). Auburn baseball gave an option to get a refund on the remaining games or donate back to the program. SEC tournament refunded all tickets, but we had just snagged some spiffy seats this year, so I am hoping that we get to select those same seats next time. And if there is no baseball in May put me on some sort of watch because I will decay into despair by then.

    • I understand, ‘seester. I hope you get done right. It’s chafing me that my son probably won’t get to go to a football game his first year on campus in Tuscaloosa.

      • Even though the grand plans are to have face to face instruction in our system, all of my courses have been moved to online-only format. I hope N has a better time of it.
