Thursday miscellanea #543

  • What strange things are happening to the household budget. Grocery expenditures up 200%. Gasoline expenditures down 90%. Hey, let’s get a headset for the cordless phone.
  • Well, I gobbled the third season of Ozark in six days. Later this month I’ll do the same to the sixth season of Bosch. Does anyone have any discipline when it comes to the best shows?
  • I set up a new laptop for myself last month and for Aaron this afternoon, and I’ll tell you, it hasn’t taken me long to get hooked on SSDs. Depending on what you read, these might fail a little earlier than traditional moving-parts hard drives, but that’s no big deal as long as you keep current backups. They certainly are pleasant to use day to day.
  • SETI@home is no longer pushing new data for analysis. I’m supporting Einstein@Home now.
  • I drove down to Anaheim Chili for our dinner Tuesday night. It was good to have my Texas. It was truly bizarre how empty the city was at “rush hour.” If you want your favorite local restaurateurs to be around post-pandemic, please go see them as often as you can right now. They need you badly. Make a plan. Hit two or three a week.
  • The iRacing IndyCar race at Watkins Glen was a bit of a mixed bag to watch, but it was definitely more exciting than no race at all. Big congratulations to Sage Karam for winning. We have another one on Saturday at Barber.
  • Today was supposed to be the day we returned from the Alabama Gulf Coast, and I was supposed to be off all week. Instead I just took today and tomorrow. Today I slept very late, but got some things done to advance household objectives (see Aaron’s laptop, above). Tomorrow I’m actually going to work outside a bit. My waistline needs that. (And, frankly, a daily plan from here forward. I was already slacking on my weight, and working at home definitely has not helped.)
