It seems our friend COVID-19, better known as “the coronavirus,” has been freely circulating in Washington State, and who knows where else, for several weeks now.
I’m heartened to hear this. The last thing we needed was a ready-set-go “countdown” of any granularity to further excite the excitable. This is a nice “yeah, it’s been here a good while. Relax. Live your life. Wash your hands.”
Do you remember changing the way you live your life in 2009 for the swine flu pandemic? No, because you didn’t. And guess what? The coronavirus numbers have an extremely steep climb to make before they’re anywhere near those 2009 flu numbers.
Some people will, regrettably, die. (How many Americans does influenza kill each year?) Many more will not. And many of those many more will have a cold, never know it was COVID-19, and move on.
As I type, the flu is a much larger threat to the American public than the coronavirus. That threat abates with warmer weather, which is coming soon. There is good reasoning to believe the coronavirus will, as well.
So, to those who need to hear this: quit tanking the markets, leave some face masks at Home Depot for people who want to paint this weekend, and calm down in general.
