Hulman & Co., owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 1945 and owner of the IndyCar sanctioning body since its inception in 1996, will sell both to Penske Corporation for an undisclosed sum. The deal is expected to close in January.
It’s difficult to see a downside here. I’m happy about this deal in exactly the same way I was happy about Disney acquiring Star Wars. It’s one of my favorite things going to an owner whose stewardship I believe in deeply. Roger Penske understands and has passion for the sport, and channeled through his business acumen, that passion should translate to great things.
(He did say at the press conference this morning that he wouldn’t be calling any race strategy next year. I will miss seeing him on the pit box.)
