Run off by Hurricane Michael

Well, this beach trip was the first one we’ve ever taken that was shortened by a hurricane. We were planning to leave Thursday morning at our leisure, but instead got up Tuesday morning and left about 7:30.

We were in Fort Morgan, at the very westernmost area of concern. (That’s the side to be on in the Northern Hemisphere. Roll Tide.) Had I been by myself, I’d have been OK with staying.  However, the NWS briefly hung a hurricane watch on us in the run-up, and that was over the top for Lea. (Really, she’d have been very anxious had we remained in any case, and under the circumstances that would have been a trumping consideration.)

Traffic was mostly fine until we got to Montgomery, and then it was snarled all the way to Birmingham. So I said “we’re going on an adventure!” Over the objections of our frustratedly squawking nav system, we got on 231 in Montgomery, and then came into Birmingham on 280. Based on the location reports of some fellow travelers, this actually saved us about 15 minutes. (And we were moving all the time!)

The trip was considerably shorter than we’d have liked, but it was a good one. We got good beach time in. We got our relaxation on. I had a marvelous piece of blackened cobia.

Michael is flirting with Category 5 as I type. God be with everyone as he comes ashore.
