Thursday miscellanea #482

  • Some old friends of mine decided to remain in their house near Panama City, rather than evacuate for Hurricane Michael. (I didn’t see this plan in time, else I’d have tried to dissuade them.) No one has heard from them since yesterday about noon. This is almost certainly a predictable result of all communication infrastructure being down. However, given the location of their house, there’s a significant chance they saw eyewall. Please keep them in your prayers.
  • We had a pleasant time walking around downtown Huntsville today as partial compensation for missing two beach days because of our early return. I think we’ve successfully avoided our kids being too cool for us in this regard (and at their ages, I think the past tense is safe). They still tease a little bit, but I also think they have a good time. What a blessing!

  • Sears is probably about to declare bankruptcy. This makes me sad. Sears is like an old pal I wish I saw more, but it just got too hard.
  • There is a nascent women-only open-wheel racing series called W Series Racing. This is a terrible idea. Women have no inherent disadvantages in motorsports, and there is demonstrably no institutional obstacle to them competing in top series. There is no reason for them to have their own league. Katie Hargitt agrees.
  • Dear Crimson Nation: please behave yourself this Saturday.
  • We are super-stoked for a fall football Saturday that feels like fall. Chili. Definitely chili.
