I don’t consider the war on human trafficking a particularly partisan one. In fact, when I speak to a group as a representative of the North Alabama Human Trafficking Force, somewhere near the end I make that very point, saying something like:
This is not a Democratic issue, or a Republican issue, or a white issue, or a black issue, or a straight issue, or a gay issue, or a Christian issue, or a Muslim issue. This is a human issue. We are so divided in so many ways today. Surely this is something for which we can all unite; something we can fight and ultimately defeat together.
You know, it sounds kind of banal and lame when I type it out and then read it. For all I know it sounds that way when I say it, too. I don’t know. But I believe it. I think this crisis of humanity—this abyss—goes in a big human hopper, not a red one or a blue one. If there are contrary narratives, real or perceived, let us address them by exception.
