SPACE FORCE

President Trump today spoke of a proposed sixth branch of the military known as SPACE FORCE. The three immediate thoughts I have are as follows:

  • There are 24 different people who have been to the moon, and 12 of them walked on it. This was accomplished without SPACE FORCE. It seems the regular old service branches worked out fine for them.
  • Space has been militarized for more than 50 years, and developments continue apace. (The Outer Space Treaty limits some of the most heinous things we might consider, but stops well short of prohibiting all militarization.) To my knowledge, no need for SPACE FORCE has yet been indicated.
  • We have no known extraterrestrial enemy, nor any rational basis from which to imagine the nature of one (and thus appropriate defense against one). So, it’s impossible to realistically define a charter for SPACE FORCE on that basis.

My fourth thought is the one thing I have definitely decided:  We should always write SPACE FORCE with all capital letters.

Because SPACE FORCE is much funnier than Space Force.

  1. I know we don’t need it. I know it is just a distraction to keep us from realizing the truth. But, Man, how cool would a SPACE FORCE patch be?

    • Very cool indeed, and I suspect we’ll be able to avail ourselves of one very soon, if we can’t already. It would look great next to a Hawkwind patch on an old-school heavy metal jacket. 🙂
