Well, our esteemed president’s final State of the Union address was last night. It was full of self-congratulatory pap, false dilemmas, and comically insincere appeals for civility in our discourse.
So, it was a standard Obama speech. It wouldn’t take a particularly clever software program to write them at this point.
I don’t like what the State of the Union address has become. It’s infected with pomp and pageantry that is far beyond dignified, just like too much of the rest of the presidency. And when the president is a self-important twit who nakedly loves to be hero-worshiped, it’s just that much more obvious how much of a problem it’s become.
Of the plausible 2016 winners, I think only Ted Cruz might tamp down this nonsense. Hillary would fan it, but at least try to do so unobtrusively. Trump would pour gasoline on it.
Before radio and television, the president commonly communicated the state of the union with a written report to Congress. Wouldn’t you love to have a president who would resume that practice?
Do we have any hope of recovering the presidency from excessive celebrity?
