When I attended what was then known as the Episcopal Day School all those years ago, we took two out-of-town field trips that I can remember. My favorite was to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. But a close second was the trip we took to Montgomery, as part of my Alabama history class in the fourth grade. I had so much fun on the various tours we took. I remember my favorite stop being the first White House of the Confederacy.
Alabama history remains part of the fourth grade curriculum, and sure enough, both of my boys got to go to Montgomery too. I had a similar conversation with each of them when they returned.
“So did you have a good time in Montgomery?”
“Yes!”
“Good. I did too, when I was your age. Now, the good news is you don’t ever have to go back!”
To the extent that I’ve looked into this crap, which is admittedly not a large one, I feel validated.
I’m proud of Alabama. None of that pride originates in Montgomery.
