Paul Ryan accepts Romney VP slot

Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan was at the top of my wish list of plausible VP candidates, and I’m delighted Mitt Romney has selected him.  Ryan is very smart, practical about the budget disaster facing the United States, and positively unflappable under pressure.  He is an outstanding choice.

Gentlemen, it’s time to tell the story of a Romney presidency now.  It’s time to talk about American exceptionalism and leadership.  It’s time to play a little more defense, and a lot more offense.  Our esteemed president cannot run on his record, so he isn’t talking about it.  It’s important for you to talk about it, but always in terms of alternatives.  Tell us, specifically, how it will be better when you win.

(It’s not a difficult story to tell, you know.  A lot of it was simply the well-established American narrative of hopes, dreams, and opportunity for all until January 20, 2009, when we learned how rotten we all were.)

  1. The media will paint them both as racists just for being two white guys. Hope they are prepared. I’m happy with the choice of Ryan, too, I was just expecting Rubio or Ayotte.

  2. I’m also very happy with the Ryan pick. FAR more happy than if – as was once rumored – Pawlenty had been the selection.

That being said, a friend of mine brought up an interesting point – Ryan voted for TARP, Medicare Part D, and the auto bailout. Yet now he talks about fiscal conservatism?

    Thoughts?

  3. Pawlenty was my first choice, but I’m happy with Ryan. Wasn’t it some ridiculous health care summit Obama called a few years ago where Ryan eviscerated him in about 5 minutes (and on camera)? It should be fun watching him take on Biden in a debate.

  4. Miria, no doubt about it, but that would have happened no matter what. Anyone not a white male who would agree to be on a Republican ticket is obviously not a “real” . For example, Sarah Palin was, and is, the embodiment of everything feminists say they want. But she’s conservative, so she’s an impostor.

Falcon, I find a vote for TARP slightly less offensive than votes for Part D and Government Motors. Nevertheless, I would expect there to be some walking back there that may even approach a mea culpa. Romney has said repeatedly that GM should have declared bankruptcy by the book and not the way it happened, and he’s right.

Jenny, he’s brutally efficient at dispatching nonsense. I’m glad he’s on my side. The VP debate is going to be hilarious.
