Weekend notes

We’re waiting for what looks to be at least another inch of rain.  I hope it hits right when I put my head on my pillow.  “They” are sticking to their forecasts for snow tomorrow night.  We’re running out of winter.  Might be our last shot.

I’m coaching Nathan’s Upward team again tomorrow morning.  Tomorrow afternoon Lea and her sister are taking the boys to the circus.  I don’t carry huge disdain for circuses around with me, and objectively I think I understand their appeal; they’ve just never been my thing.  As a tot I went with my friend Edwin, who always tilted his head back to look at you because his mother never kept his bangs cut.  My most vivid circus memory is having cotton candy nastiness all over my hands and face.

(Now cotton candy is something I can’t believe anyone likes.)

I’ve got some cleaning up and cleaning out to do, so maybe I’ll use some of tomorrow’s alone time on that.  I’m also the last person in the Western Hemisphere who hasn’t seen The Dark Knight, and that’s waiting for me on Blu-ray.

Oh, and along with unplugged Sundays, I went ahead and tossed alcoholic beverages on the Lent abstention pile.  (Well, I did fudge just a bit; Charles and I hung out last night, so I started today.  I’ll go until Tuesday after Easter.)  I’m sure I’ll reliably miss them, which of course is a large part of the point.  Plus, subbing diet ginger ale for beer in the evening ought to pay a side dividend in my waistline if I keep everything else the same, right?

Have a good weekend.

  1. Ah, the clowns.

See, clowns at a circus don’t bother me. It’s the lone sumbitch walking down the street–or God forbid, knocking on your door–that creeps the shit out of me.

  2. Edwin Waitzman, by chance? The description of the bangs may have given it away. Would love to hear your opinion of The Dark Knight – I thought it was a great movie. My wife was creeped out and had trouble sleeping that night! btw, she wants to watch it again…

  3. Bigdave: Today’s the day. All of the fruit is lining up nicely this afternoon for digital, child-inappropriate movies at obscene volume.

I think I’m going to watch Batman Begins again first. I thought it was a reasonably good movie, but I left it a little underwhelmed. I’ll give it another shot, both for its own sake and to aid any relevant continuing plot points in The Dark Knight.

  4. You freak me out, Bo. We watched TDK last night and I was sure I was the last person in the Continental 48 to see it. Beat you by 18 hrs. Good game by the kids today. Coach Bo has a lot to be proud of. Nathan was as scrappy as I’ve ever seen him. Tough one, that one. When is it legal to sign children up for pit fighting?

    Clowns….yeesh.

  5. Well, the Batman double feature went off with just about ten minutes to spare on Lea and the children returning home. Batman Begins played a tick or two better for me this time around. I’m still digesting The Dark Knight, and I’m not doing a full review because like I said, I’m really late to this party. However, my initial impression is that for film in general, it might be top 200 for me; for action/thrills, top 50; and for superhero films, top 2. It’s essentially flawless moviemaking: the sort of movie for which any complaint you have begins dying on the vine of triviality as soon as you begin speaking or typing it, and by the time your thought is finished, it sounds absurd. I’m glad I bought it, because I will definitely watch it again.

Bigdave, I almost never have trouble sleeping because of a movie, but it’s easy for me to see how someone could. This is easily the rawest and most visceral Batman film of any in the two modern franchises.

BamaDan, that’s just weird. That disc has sat on my shelf for two damned months because it’s too long for after the kids go to bed, and I just haven’t had the empty house to watch it.

Thank you for your kind words on my guest coaching. I was a bit less anxious about it this time, but I still felt myself unclench a bit after it was over. I was really pleased to see that Z. on our team and your J. both got their baskets!

Not sure on the pit fighting, but I’ll settle for Nathan not getting bullied. 🙂
