Bullets

  • The Blue Angels are here.  The show is this weekend, but I can see them practicing from my house, from work, and from all points in between.  Cool.
  • I’m getting excited about football starting, but I can do without starting linebackers selling cocaine in the parking lot of the football complex.  Please, no more of that.
  • On a whim a couple of nights ago, I made my butt talk to Aaron, Ace Ventura-style.  This is now requested unendingly.
  • Real men go home to their wives.
  • I have had quite enough of more than one person close to me marinating in misery endlessly.  Knock it the fuck off.  There is nothing more to understand, and I’m tired of hearing about it.  Everyone is.  Pick yourself up and start living again.  You have the power.
  • We’re discussing George Orwell’s masterpiece 1984 at Dark and Stormy on Sunday night at 8 CDT.  That’s right, dudes and dolls—we’re in prime time this month.  Aw, yeah.  Be there.
  • Lea’s van is supposed to be ready tomorrow.  I’m looking forward to commuting in the Versa next week.
  • Tried the new Vietnamese place with Melanie today.  It is worthy, and it is less than half the distance from my house that the other one is (6 miles vs. 14, roughly).  I think there shall be pho for weekend lunch in the near future.
  • Looking forward to the Firestone Indy 200.  So is Nathan.  We’ll see you there.
  • I am pleased to report that the new Def Leppard album Songs from the Sparkle Lounge is the real deal, with no apologies or qualifications necessary.  Also, Nostradamus from Judas Priest is incredible.  Haven’t picked up Saints of Los Angeles from the Crüe yet.  2008 or 1988?

  2. Ah. The ‘hog. 🙂

The new Vietnamese place is Saigon, and it’s in that shopping center where China King used to be on 20 (like north of Krystal).

  3. Since my tour of duty in Viet Nam, I’ve never eaten in a Vietnamese restaurant. Make no conclusions about this other than what I tell you:

I was in Nha Trang for several months, and had to travel across the city every day to my duty (which I cannot tell you about). We passed by the Nuoc Mam factory every day. I recall nothing in my life which smelled so bad as this place they made the ubiquitous national condiment. Man, that place stank. It has “flavored” my view of Vietnamese food ever since.

I’ll relent one of these days.

  4. I’m not a huge fan of Vietnamese food but the last time I went with Bo I found something I liked. It was chicken soup. It was cooked in special clay pots, called something else and had a few different spices then mom’s but it was basically chicken soup.

  5. Re Def Lep’s latest album: Does it RAWK like Pyromania and Hysteria? Or is it full of more sappy, pop-radio-ready pablum that they’ve put out the last few times?

I’m enjoying Tantric’s latest “The End Begins” and Disturbed’s ‘Indestructible” … Rock on, dude!

  6. Gerry: Vietnamese unseated Italian as my favorite cuisine about four years ago. Do go. Delicious!

    Brina Bat: At the airport.

Charles: Would she smile on cue?

Tami: It’s the real deal. This is the spiritual follow-up to Pyromania and Hysteria. And thanks for the recommendations; I’ll check those out.

  7. Speaking of Italian food. When well-prepared, I like it. Most “Italian” restaurants are so godawful that I basically won’t go to them. I will mention Venda Ravioli on Federal Hill in Providence, RI, as an exception. Since my son-in-law is named Mastrianni, and we have good friends named Basignani, we don’t lack for the real stuff.

I feel the same about Chinese as Italian. Sadly, no Chinese cooks in my clan. If you are ever in Boca Raton, hit Uncle Tai (no, it’s not a Thai place).

Ditto Mexican. I will plug Eduardo de San Angel in Fort Lauderdale.

  8. I went to lunch with a Chinese lady that regularly ordered off the menu at this particular Chinese restaurant. I tried some of hers. It didn’t taste anything remotely like the food I’d ordered. Although, I can’t say that I found it particularly appealing, either…

I had a German office mate that vouched for our oldest local German restaurant being authentic. I love it!
