Pie

Bo:  “What should I blog about tonight, boys?”

Lea (overhearing):  “Pie.”

So here is the pie post.

Pie is current in our family right now because an obviously witty little girl came up to my firstborn in the gym last week and said “Nathan!  Let me tell you a secret!”  Nathan stopped and listened.  She whispered “I like pie.”

Why is that funny?  I don’t know, but it is.  Pie is funny in general.  How’s the meeting?  Well, I was told there would be pie.  Hey, after dinner, let’s go out for pie.  What’d you buy at the silent auction?  I bought a pie.

My favorite pie is lemon, with a slight preference for lemon meringue over lemon icebox.  My second favorite is apple, but a really strong and warm and cinnamony apple with a really tasty scoop of vanilla ice cream melting on it comes close to bettering lemon meringue.  After that is a tier of second-favorites that includes key lime, pecan, peanut butter, chocolate, and Lea’s chess pie.  After that comes a tier including cherry (which I liked much more as a child) and coconut.  I like most of the less common berry pies at about this level too, I suppose.  I don’t like rhubarb pie or pumpkin pie, but I could get through some of a piece of either of them in polite company.

Lea’s favorite pie is her mother’s apple.  Nathan’s favorite pie is lemon meringue.  Aaron’s favorite pie is peanut butter.

Mmmmm, pie.

Once when Lawrence was little, he was trying to put something together. I offered a suggestion, he accomplished the task and was beaming. I said, “See? Piece of Cake!” He beamed even more and said, “We’re having CAKE?!?!?!”

Then, he consistently got “easy as pie” mixed up with “piece of cake” and every good deed was a “piece of pie.”

Camellia grill in New orleans makes the best chocolate icebox pie I’ve ever had in my entire life, and I’ve tried quite a few.

Of course, Revenge of the Nerds: “Hey, that’s MY PI.”

I like my Two-Slug Apple pie the best. Flaky crust, spicy filling and the faint aroma and richness of just enough Jack Daniels to make you wish for more.

In a pinch, I’ll make do with a slice of banana cream….
