Review: Pho V Nam

Lea, Mia, Aaron, and I had lunch at Pho V Nam today. This is a full-service Vietnamese restaurant that opened about two weeks ago in the northern end of Village Shoppes of Madison (where Publix is) on County Line Rd.

(Needless to say, particularly with the closure of Saigon on Madison Boulevard, this new restaurant has been eagerly anticipated at our house.)

Pho V Nam has pho right in the name, but there are numerous other Vietnamese dishes as well. You’ll find vermicelli, clay pots, and banh mi sandwiches, as well as a few house specials. The familiar spring/summer (depending on where you are) rolls served with plum sauce are also available, and I started there. For lunch Lea had a combination beef/chicken clay pot, Mia had pho tai nam, Aaron had pho ga, and I had pho tai.

All of our dishes were freshly prepared. The pho came to the table at my preferred temperature, which is too hot to eat immediately but carrying enough heat to remain appealing after I’m finished dressing it.

We all enjoyed our lunch, and the service was consistently good throughout the meal. Everything is reasonably priced, well within expectations.

My inaugural visit to Pho V Nam generated three complaints, all minor. First, there is no lemongrass beef on the menu. Second, this is another restaurant promulgating the Closed on Monday scourge. Finally, the pho, while pleasant and appetizing, tastes just a bit tentative. There is plenty of gustatory headroom to season it more vibrantly. (And I don’t mean heat; it’s not supposed to be spicy hot. I mean the pho-typical spices: star anise, coriander, and the like.)

We are delighted to have Pho V Nam right in our neighborhood, and anticipate returning often!
