Thursday miscellanea #590

  • I bought a second Pilot Metropolitan so I could switch between black and blue easily. I’m enjoying myself, but even after several handwritten correspondences, I’m still making friends with fountain pens. I think it may still be a good while before I have any desire to spend significantly more money on one.
  • The first vehicle to be produced by the Huntsville Toyota/Mazda plant is the Toyota Corolla Cross, a small crossover. It’s attractive enough and ought to be a reliable piece. Part of me still can’t believe the level of equipment to be found now in even entry-level vehicles. You can’t really buy a stripper anything now except a pickup or work van, and it’s getting tough even in those segments.
  • Mia got her wisdom teeth out this morning. Her immediate aftermath was louder and more profane than Aaron’s was. This is not surprising. I’m now the only person in the house with wisdom teeth.
  • Lea and I have devoured four episodes of Mare of Easttown, and will probably watch the last three by the weekend. Hope they’re already making more of these.
  • Gavin MacLeod, best known for playing Captain Stubing on The Love Boat, has died at 90. RIP.
  • The closest Vietnamese restaurant to my house ever has recently opened, and I am very excited! Watch for a review of Pho Nam soon.
  • Congratulations to perennial fan favorite Helio Castroneves, who won his fourth Indianapolis 500 on Sunday and thereby joined a club also including only A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears, and Al Unser. That is an elite circle indeed, and it certainly was fun to watch him right after the race. This race also broke the record for the fastest Indy 500 ever at 190.690 mph, beating the old record of 187.433 mph mph set in 2013 (the first one the boys and I attended). Other good news: Indy 500 television viewership hit a 5-year high.
