Thursday miscellanea #582

  • Of all of the COVID-19 disruptions, I think I miss unrestricted corporate worship the most. I miss hugging too. Sadly, I expect both to be significantly diminished indefinitely.
  • Went and got the lumber to redo the deck. It’s a job amenable to nibbling a couple of hours at a time—a bunch of it is just one-for-one board replacement—so I think I’m going to do that a few times instead of kill myself from dawn till dusk. Thanks to my nifty friend Heather for plugging me into the right folks!
  • We had the Conecuh Big Chief Premium Franks for dinner early this week, and they were phenomenal. Figures they aren’t available in the online store. We may get some Little Chief (which are normally-sized hot dogs and, I presume, the same recipe). I tell you, if that exit were just 100 miles closer or so…
  • My longtime acquaintance Gary Houk has cowritten a feature film! Cerebrum drops May 4. It will stream. Stay tuned for where.
  • One of my realtor friends sends personal handwritten notes, and as I read and considered one recently, I found I liked the idea of reestablishing that capability for myself. So I have some new tools and I’m practicing. (After decades of not handwriting anything longer than a quick scrawl on a Post-It, my penmanship is truly atrocious.)
  • The North Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force is planning another Conversations installment for May. This one will focus on labor trafficking, including ways we may be unwittingly supporting it at the grocery store. Watch our Facebook page or our Twitter feed—both of which I’m certain you’re following already, yes?—for details.
  • Tonight we bid adieu to Waking the Dead as we watch the last two-parter of the ninth and final season. This is not a great show, but it is a good one, with appealing characters and sharp writing. We’ve enjoyed it despite an occasional plot pothole. If you like police procedurals and can handle a bit of periodic gore, check it out.
