Thursday miscellanea #484

  • 484 is a perfect square. Perfect squares make me happy.
  • I’m not sure how I missed Cyn Shea’s before, but Ashley and I went there for the first time last week and I thought it was awesome. Looking forward to future visits. (Edit: Didn’t mean to brag on it two miscellanea posts in a row, but that I did should tell you something about my high regard for it.)
  • You may have heard the Red Sox won the World Series. So, of course, at the victory parade, “fans” threw things and damaged the trophy. I don’t ever hear of things like this happening down here. Winning major sports championships and tearing things up in response is an “up north” thing.
  • When I first saw A Nightmare on Elm Street (as a new release rental in 1985), I was at a friend’s house with several other kids and when we decided to pop popcorn, we all had tap water with it because nobody was brave enough to go out to the garage fridge and get the Cokes. Nate and I watched it last night, and it might have been the first time I’ve seen it all the way through since then. To be kind, it has aged poorly. Nate enjoyed it, but mostly for cheese factor. (I still dig Heather Langenkamp though.)
  • There are two absurd automotive styling cues that are very much in vogue right now. One is the gigantic front grill (very little of which is typically functional). Toyota is the worst offender on this one, though there are numerous others. The other is the “floating” roof that does not appear, at a glance, to be connected to the rear of the car. These can’t die soon enough.
  • Legend Willie McCovey has died at 80. God be with his family and friends.
  • I am very happy about returning to standard time this weekend. All of your whining about it getting dark early is glorious music to my ears.
