Thursday miscellanea #626

  • I’m so fond of pointing out when the Thursday miscellanea number is a perfect square, and then I neglected to mention last week’s. Worse, 625 is a perfect fourth (?)—a perfect square squared. I’ll have to get to 1296 to hit the next one of those, and given that I don’t do these religiously every week anymore, I might not get there.
  • Hyundai has manufactured and sold many, many 2016-2021 cars without simple immobilizer technology that has been routine for decades, so guess what? They’re remarkably easy to steal. Hyundai’s solution is to sell you what should have been in the cars to begin with. You can walk out with the kit, or they’re happy to charge you dealership labor rates to install it, if you’d rather do that. Terrible PR work, folks. You don’t remedy a stupid mistake by making another one.
  • I’m eating way too much processed meat. I’m working on getting it down to a time or two a month. It’s not easy. Sandwiches are the toughest. I’ll eat veggie sandwiches, but I want to make them good, and that takes prep, doesn’t it? Actually, if I just commit to vegetarian lunch most days…hmm. I’ll have to think about that.
  • Last week Georgia tiptoed past a terrible Missouri team it should have blasted, which I think is the strongest indicator yet that this might be another year in which the SEC eats itself to a larger degree than usual. I expected A&M to be Alabama’s most clarifying game this season. Now I think it might be Tennessee.
  • Had both children home last weekend. That was glorious. Getting just Mia this weekend, and then just Aaron next weekend. That’s good too. Still kind of a wonderland to navigate the whole empty nest thing.
  • Colors is on HBO right now. I never saw it back in the day, so I watched it recently. I enjoyed it, though I’m sure it was a lot edgier in 1988. Gang portrayals have gotten steadily grittier, of course, but the other thing that has aged poorly is the synth-heavy score. It’s the rare score indeed from the mid- to late ’80s that doesn’t sound low-budget and inappropriate.
  • A longtime BoWilliams.com reader got in touch this week and said some nice things, and then offered me a 2022 Paqui One Chip Challenge. I met him and said hello and “thanks, Duane!” I’ll see if I can find a window this weekend for the deed. Of course, there will be a video. I said after the unpleasant aftermath of Fire & Spice’s Sicario Heat Challenge six years ago that I was retired from stunts, and I have been. However, this is a much smaller quantity that I’ll have much closer to the beginning of the day than the end. Hopefully that will be sufficient mitigation.
