Thursday miscellanea #478

  • God be with everyone in Hurricane Florence’s path. It looks like she’s lost a little strength, but she’s still very dangerous.
  • The final IndyCar race of the season is Sunday at Sonoma, and as usual, the championship points race is a squeaker. Looks like either Scott Dixon, a four-time champion, the current points leader, and the finest driver of this generation; or Alexander Rossi, who won the 2016 Indy 500 as a rookie with a ballsy fuel strategy, and who has three wins, five more podiums, and only three finishes outside the top ten this season. Will Power and Josef Newgarden are mathematically eligible, but long shots. Check it out at 5:30 CDT Sunday evening on NBCSN.
  • I got another Secret Aardvark sauce in my latest Fuego Box. Given the high regard in which I hold the Aardvark habanero sauce, I looked forward to trying the Serrabanero, which is a green sauce. Unfortunately, I didn’t like it much at all. I’m not sure we’ll finish it. I’ll run it by the boys for their Sunday morning eggs before we decide.
  • My net-acquaintance Corey Lewis has documented a collection of 24 examples of the Imperial that Chrysler sold in the early 1980s, right when Lee Iacocca rode into town. This car is mostly forgotten now, except to car nerds. It was a large rear-wheel-drive personal luxury coupe, on the same platform as the Dodge Mirada and the Chrysler Cordoba of the era. I loved its daring, weird styling—particularly the “bustleback” design that looked so much better here than on the Cadillac Seville. I always thought it’d be fun to restore one of these to a high standard, upgrading with modern technology where appropriate, and use it for a daily driver.
  • The second season of Ozark has dropped. I forgot too much, just as I obliquely mentioned that I thought I might. I’ve had to read back through episode summaries, and I watched the first season’s final episode again. I’ll pick up the new ones this weekend.
  • When you buy movies, there’s something to be said for purchasing a physical disc. It seems you may not own an electronic version after all.
  • I’m no longer convinced I can make flax seed crackers taste good enough to be worth the trade-offs. After all, they may be low-carb, but they’re still rather caloric. I’m trying a super-spicy one this weekend, and that may be it.
