BoWilliams.com On Huntsville Hot Wings: Rookiez Wingz

This is part of an ongoing series reviewing hot wings in the Huntsville area. Visit #HsvHotWings for a comprehensive linked list.

Rookiez Wingz recently opened on Governors Drive, just west of the Family Dollar and in the general vicinity of where Terry’s Pizza used to be. The inimitable Kat and I stopped by for lunch.

This is a sports bar that looks to be in progress. The model is order and pay at the bar, then go get it when it’s ready. The heat levels are commingled with perhaps ten flavors, and the hottest is Xtra Hot. A 12-piece combo with fries and a canned Coca-Cola was $11.94.

Quality: 4/10. My six drums and six flats were cooked well and served at a cool-but-within-tolerance temperature. However, they were quite small, easily falling within the bottom quartile of all of the wings I’ve explored on the #hsvhotwings adventure.

Flavor: 6/10. Tasty enough, but quite safe; a very tightly constrained interpretation of “buffalo wing.” If you made a tried-and-true church picnic wing recipe, this is plausibly the result.

Heat: 2/10. Not much going on here. The heat was firmly in the Louisiana hot sauce/buffalo realm, but there was very little of it. If this is Xtra Hot, then I’m not sure where Hot and Mild have to go.

The net press for Rookiez Wingz is pretty good, so I was optimistic. Perhaps I caught them on a down day. I’ll line them up for a validation visit.
