Many people are funny about pimiento cheese. There’s an exaggerated snobbery about it. “Oh, I could never eat anything but homemade,” they sniff. Sometimes they even claim ownership of the only true recipe or similar.
We’re talking about a mixture of cheese, mayonnaise, and sweet peppers, so it’s something that can only be so bad. I like my own pimiento cheese, but I like others too. And the new pimiento cheese at Anaheim Chili is tasty indeed.
There are several new menu items, and pimiento cheese is responsible for two of them. I recently tried the pimiento cheese burger with a side of (also new) pineapple slaw.
(Get extra napkins. You have a good chance of making a mess.)
The pimiento cheese is much smoother than I make mine (which facilitates ease of use in grilled cheese sandwiches). It’s flavorful and a little sweet, with a distinctive (signature?) smoky note from poblanos in the recipe. It comes on the burger, and there’s a small side of spicy pickles and peppers, and that’s it.
It all works marvelously. I didn’t know if it would come with lettuce & tomato or what, but it’s good that it doesn’t. Gustatorily it would just distract (and plus the burger already needs all the structural integrity it can get).
The slaw game at Anaheim was already strong, and the pineapple recipe is delicious. If you like good slaw and you haven’t tried Anaheim’s yet, give it a go.
(Both the burger and the slaw receive Anaheim’s house hot sauce very well.)
The pimiento cheese burger and a side is $10.49.
