You know, I said no resolutions, but this probably counts.
2010 was many things for me, but it was not the year of the book. Remember how excited I was about Duma Key? Would you believe I brought that home from vacation with three-quarters of it read, and never picked it back up? I’ll probably have to start it over now. Inexcusable.
I did a lot of organizing in two of my “nests” this morning—my nightstand and my side table in the living room. I discovered a dozen books I haven’t read. I purchased some of them. Others are gifts. Here they all are, ready to go. Now, to go.
(Saintseester has been waiting patiently nearly as long as we’ve been friends to discuss Life of Pi with me. ‘seester, this month. You have my word. Let’s talk about it while we’re huffing around Parkway Place after a financially and calorically sensible lunch.)
Also, I have an old high school friend who reads the Bible, in 365 bites, every year. She’s inspired me to do the same thing this year. I’ve accomplished large swaths of it before, but I’ve probably not managed any more than two-thirds of the whole thing. I’m looking forward to that too.
I think I lost a lot of time in 2010—time I might have spent reading for pleasure—down a rathole called Facebook. It’s a tremendous tool, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the connections it has enabled, but it’s important to keep it properly purposed. For Facebook, or Twitter, or this blog, or whatever, I feel like I’m using them correctly when they reflect what I have going on, not when they become what I have going on. I allow that line to get blurrier sometimes than I’d like.
Social media gets incestuously self-referential in a hurry without discipline.
Commence to crackin’. Happy New Year.

Yes – we will walk and talk. And if you want to pick a book for me to read, have at it.
Cool. I’ll think about that. I know you’ve already read many of the ones that spring immediately to mind.
Actually I’ve always kind of felt like I owed you A Canticle for Leibowitz too.
Life of Pi is a wittier and much quicker read than Canticle. There’s time.
