Thursday miscellanea #627

  • Irrationally exuberant ones—and there are enough of you to vaguely alarm me—the wait is almost over. The ultimate dream destination GAS STATION will be open November 21. A friend told me on Facebook “it’s the Walt Disney World of convenience stores.” And to me, that says it all. “The Walt Disney World of convenience stores” is not a paradigm I need in my life. I’m not anti-commercialism—far from it—but EFF EFF ESS, people. I may stay out of Buc-ee’s forever. I think that affectation might be worth more to me than anything I could purchase within.
  • My Precious Hearts tour for this year is set, and I’m excited about it. Now if COVID-19 can stay at a dull roar, that would be marvelous.
  • Lead guitarist Mick Mars is retiring from Motley Crue. He has had to manage a rare form of arthritis called ankylosing spondylitis for many years, and it’s finally too much for him to continue. Wow, what a legacy. He’s responsible for some of the sleaziest, nastiest, groovingest riffs in hard rock/metal history (“Wild Side” topping the list). Thank you for the memories, sir!
  • Nothing makes me feel older lately than hearing from young people in my life who can only remember Alabama football being spectacularly successful. I told my 18-year-old son that Alabama went 3-8 in 2000 and 4-9 in 2003, and for a moment he thought I was kidding. Yes, folks, Mike DuBose’s Alabama won the SEC title in 1999, and Dennis Franchione and Mike Shula each coached 10-win seasons. It was, on balance, still a pretty dark time between Stallings and Saban.
  • While we’re on football, y’all chill out. I love it too, but sheesh. Get past it affecting your mood for any longer than a couple of hours.
  • “How come we’re not watching the Lord of the Rings show?” Lea just asked me. “We’re just not yet,” I replied. We need a show a lot less during football season. We did finish the most recent season of Shetland and we’re glad to hear it’s coming back next year.
  • The electric bill starts with a 1 again! I’ll take it!

  1. LOL – you just have to give Buc-ee’s a try. I took my wife to the one in Leeds last year, and I wandered around that place like a kid in FAO Schwarz.

I remember the brisket chants “Fresh brisket on the board…” and how good that chopped brisket sandwich tasted.

Now you’ll have to go just to hear the brisket chants (and maybe even taste the brisket).

Maybe even provide a food review.
