Thursday miscellanea #629

  • Christine McVie, the songbird of Fleetwood Mac, has died at 79. As my longtime friend Robby pointed out on Facebook, she was in the Peter Green, Bob Welch, and Buckingham/Nicks lineups of the band. Apart from the namesake founding members—Mick Fleetwood and John McVie—she’s the only person who can say that. Godspeed, magical Christine. Thank you so much for the music.
  • I hope Dale Murphy gets into the Hall of Fame. He was a fine fellow indeed to be my first baseball hero.
  • Neon Lilly, a bona fide Slavic restaurant and the best eatery to open at Bridge Street in years, is now closed indefinitely because the owner has a serious medical issue. Of course I hope she gets better soon, but the restaurant sounds unlikely to reopen. I hate that.
  • In other local restaurant news, people have been about to lose their minds for the Whataburger on 72 in Madison to open, and it finally is—but drive-through only. I just don’t understand the borderline hysteria about stuff like this. I’m looking forward to us getting a Del Taco, but folks, it’s fast food. We have lots of locally-owned places with genuinely good food now.
  • So Ohio State grabbing the #5 CFP spot should have ended the discussion of Alabama’s path to get in. Instead, it rages on. Utah beating USC and Kansas State beating TCU are both plausible, but Purdue beating Michigan is not. (My son has now trotted out the statistic that Purdue, when unranked, is 3-0 with their current head coach against #2-ranked teams. Heh.) Alabama is almost certainly headed to the Sugar Bowl, and let’s hope Jalen Milroe has something to prove there.
  • We’re watching Suspect on BritBox now. We’re halfway through it and it’s good, but it’s dark in that oh-so-British, we-don’t-do-lollipops-and-rainbows way.
  • If you like rainy and chilly, it’s going to be a bang-up next week or so for you!
