Thursday miscellanea #624

  • I’m again trying to figure out the best way to continue BoWilliams.com. My posting schedule is a little too infrequent and erratic to suit me right now, and I’d like to up my reviews. Stay tuned.
  • Queen Elizabeth II died a week ago. God be with her immediate family and friends, as well as all of her subjects mourning her. (Ten years ago there would have been a little snark here about Americans who are obsessed with the British monarchy, but I’ve grown.)
  • I started getting ads for this tool set this week. It’s quite basic and somehow costs $295 (“marked down” from $355!). Now it carries a lifetime warranty, but so do many other hand tools well-established to be of reasonable quality. Just for grins, I replicated the set with Craftsman tools at Lowe’s, and it came out to $215 (and with a three-drawer steel toolbox, not two). It was $195 in Husky at Home Depot (also with a three-drawer steel toolbox and with an additional adjustable wrench, as well as a Milwaukee tape measure and an Empire level, as these don’t come in Husky brand). Maybe I need to start selling tool sets.
  • OK, I’m not being entirely fair. You get one year of telephone support with that tool set too. Is that worth $100? Is it worth $100 more than Google? Sheesh.
  • Saintseester and I went to Neon Lilly for lunch recently, and though there are some fusiony items on offer, a lot of the menu is straight-up eastern European. It was delightful and I’ll go back.
  • My, ahem, relaxed regimen for maintaining the front beds has bitten me. We have Cleyera “shrubs” with 6-7″ trunks. Good work, Bo. For the worst ones I’m just chopping them off and seeing what happens. (No worries, neighbors. The new mailbox moves steadily up the list too. What? It’s only been 12 years.)
  • My daughter called me at 7:15 yesterday morning, reliably generating “are you OK?” instead of “Hello?” from me. She was. Just wanted to talk about some exciting developments in her course of study. Wow.
  • Are there really mid-90s forecast next week? It would appear so. However, they’ll be fleeting.
