Thursday miscellanea, BoWilliams.com existential crisis edition

  • I haven’t decided much except that the current manifestation of BoWilliams.com is over. I probably stayed a bit too long at the fair, but hopefully not heinously so.
  • I wrote a bit before about why. On matters of politics, social issues, and so forth, I used to feel like I was contributing to the conversation. I wanted to persuade the persuadable. Periodically, I received reinforcement that I was doing so. I don’t feel like I’m doing that anymore. I won’t presumptuously assume that it can’t be done in the current climate, but I’m confident it requires more effort than I’m willing to expend.
  • (Besides that, you know what iced it for me? Thursday miscellanea posts got hard to write. I originally started doing them as a most-for-the-least way to get some content up without undue stress. Lately they’ve been albatrosses. Doubleplusungood.)
  • So what happens next? I’m not sure. I’m still chewing on that. BoWilliams.com has been live for 15 years, and I’ll likely keep it up. My reviews do well, and I enjoy writing them. It’s easier for me to see those continuing, and if not at BoWilliams.com, then where?
  • Consider this the “dedicated mulling” period. If/when I come up with a plan I like, then I’ll work on implementing it. And if I want to post something in the meantime, I’ll do that too. But today it feels like I’ll go live with a retooled site sometime around the first of the year.
  • Thank you for reading BoWilliams.com, dudes and dolls. Stay tuned.

  1. I have been a long time reader (lurker) and I will really miss your posts. Currently I consider myself a moderate Independent. A couple years ago I would have said moderate Democrat but in today’s political climate I refuse to label myself and put myself in a box so that people can make incorrect judgments about me and my beliefs.
It is possible to vote for a party’s candidates the majority of the time and not agree with the candidates about all issues. It is possible to be a Christian and be a Democrat. It is possible to be a Democrat and be pro-life. It is possible to vote for both Democratic and Republican candidates during the same election – depending on the person and the office. I know because those 3 things describe both me and my husband.
This pigeon-holding and judgment of each other has led to only hatred and the polarization of our country and it is just ridiculous. The media (on both sides) report only the extreme views and they will continue to unless we band together and make them stop. Anyway – off my soapbox. I say all of this only to make the point that you and I have agreed on most things, even though we may not always vote the same. I have really enjoyed your well-thought out opinions. You have reassured me that there are reasonable people out there, on both sides, and I appreciate that so much. Wishing you and your family well.

    • Nancy, thank you so much for your kind and thoughtfully considered comments. I don’t think I’d like to get all the way out of that kind of content. Maybe it’s less frequent but higher-effort going forward?

I go back and forth on the “in a box” thing. I understand your viewpoint completely. If I say I’m x, then a whole lot of people are going to make assumptions, and a lot of them are going to be wrong.

But, if I say I’m x, then I might also reach some people who would say “hey, I didn’t know you could be x and think y.” For example, one of the primary reasons I readily identify as a Christian is that there are a lot of people out there who think Christians hate LGBTQ+ people, period, or if they don’t hate them they at least judge them severely. As you know, that’s not me.

      It’s definitely a double-edged sword.
