Thursday miscellanea #605

  • Aaron was named a National Merit Semifinalist this week, and we are very proud!
  • So there are two servals on the loose in the area. They escaped from an exotic pet store in northern Huntsville. I can’t see that they have much natural range where it freezes, so if they’re not recovered, they’ll probably be dead in a few months even escaping accidents or predation.
  • Rolling Stone has a new list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Nobody’s going to thoroughly like anyone else’s list like this, of course, but it seems silly to me to have anything on the list newer than 10 years old (minimally; 20 would be better). How can you know that soon? You can’t.
  • There isn’t much reliable you can say in mid-September about who’s good and who isn’t. But between Appalachian State taking Miami to the wire and Alabama having perhaps a bit of an excessively casual attitude in dispatching Mercer, they better show up nasty and focused at Florida. I’m particularly interested in seeing more effective Tide defense than we saw in the 2020 SEC title game.
  • So I finally saw Maria Taylor in one of her new roles. She was a studio analyst on Sunday Night Football, and she didn’t get a lot of camera time. Come on, NBC. I only watch football and auto racing.
  • The gigantic assembly plant across Old Highway 20 from my Uncle Ed‘s house and his dad‘s house has begun churning out the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross.
  • Two races to go, and second-year IndyCar full-timer Alex Palou is in the catbird seat. He carries a 25-point lead over Pato O’Ward into Laguna Seca on Sunday. Newgarden isn’t out of it in third, but he’d need a lot of help.
