Thursday miscellanea #603

  • Aaron has band functions and will miss at least the first half of the Boise State-UCF game tonight. I offered to DVR it and watch it with him from the beginning when he got home, and I’m a hero. It’s touching me how touched he is. Dude, I love watching ball with you too!
  • Oh, and speaking of, the first real college football Saturday approaches. We’ll make our customary day of it, though I will certainly miss Maria Taylor on College GameDay. No decision yet on whether Mia will join us. I think she’s off to a great start in Tuscaloosa this semester.
  • Our local public library has a nifty new streaming platform called Blast for local music. Check it out here!
  • Hunt Club is the latest casualty of the bizarre looking glass we stepped through 18 months ago. I understand it is closed and won’t reopen. With increasingly frequent and unpredictable cuts in operating hours, Earth and Stone in Madison is making me nervous too.
  • Maybe 15 years ago I bought an entry-level hobby-grade radio control car, like what you have to go to a hobby shop for instead of a box store. I played with it a bit and then learned one of the two big profit models in this market: make some moving or load-bearing parts plastic that shouldn’t be, and then when they break, sell metal ones as “upgrades.” This year I have (re)discovered the second of the two big profit models: ye olde planned obsolescence. I found the car again recently and found the (metal) motor mount I need on eBay in Hong Kong. Dice rolled for fourteen bucks. We’ll see.
  • True confession immediately related to the previous bullet: I actually did this once already in January, but only just now opened the box, and it’s the wrong part. Why did I not open it when I got it? Well, why would it be the wrong part? Because sometimes it is. Verify upon receipt.
  • It’s not cool yet, but it’s considerably nicer than it has been. Enjoy. I know I will.
