Review: Viet House

I’ve mentioned a lot recently that one of my favorite things about Huntsville’s growth is that our restaurant game is getting stronger every day. I’m happy to report that we’re getting enough Vietnamese restaurants now to start playing better or worse in earnest. I believe Viet House brings our area total to five.

Viet House is a full-service restaurant with a spacious dining room, just a couple of doors west of Surin in the tornado shopping center on Airport Rd. Beth wanted to try it out, so we did last week.

There is an extensive menu including expected appetizers, pho, other soups, clay pots, vermicelli dishes, and even a few specials I haven’t seen before. Beth spoke highly of her chicken vermicelli, and I was pleased to see lemongrass beef, which I’ll probably have next time. Our service was efficient and friendly.

I went with the familiar pork and shrimp spring rolls to start. They were freshly prepared and responded well to my customary squirt of sriracha stirred into the plum sauce.

My old standby pho tai got the nod for an entree.

Accompaniments were fresh, and the soup itself popped wonderfully. Spiced vibrantly and confidently, the broth was just a bit sweeter than what I’ve come to expect, with cinnamon prominent in the mix. Sample size is just one so far and I’ll try a validation bowl soon, but we may have a new candidate for best pho in the area.

Until a week ago, it was unthinkable that I’d eat somewhere in this immediate area and not go to Surin, but I’m looking forward to returning to Viet House. I see many lunches happening here, and maybe even an occasional family dinner.

  1. Ate @ Viet House today for lunch.

Really wanted to say great things about the new restaurant, but seriously, I can’t find anything good to say.

Started out with the coffee with boba. Boba was slimy and the coffee was gross (and I absolutely LOVE Vietnamese coffee). After that not going so well, got some water (think it came from a swimming pool). Seafood Lemongrass was very bitter and the seafood was chewy/overdone (exception being the shrimp – it was decent).

    Don’t think they’ll be a return trip.
