- The feeling that came over me yesterday after Joe Biden was inaugurated was unexpected. I can only describe it as unclenching. I expect to disapprove of quite a bit of what he advances, but I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to the regular insane clown show instead of the absurd insane clown show, as David Burge put it yesterday.
- Lea and I have two episodes to go in season 7 of The Blacklist. We don’t love this show. In fact, in some ways, it’s kind of a mess. But there’s no doubt it’s engaging, and there are three or four very strong characters who mitigate a lot of the show’s shortcomings.
- Early pop rocker Jimmie Rodgers died on Monday. He was 87. Most of the obituaries I’ve seen lead with “Honeycomb” as his most remembered song, but I always think of “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine” first. Turns out “they” were right. “Honeycomb” was a #1 single, and “Kisses” only hit #7. RIP.
- I’ve invested fairly heavily in the Ryobi ONE+ line of cordless power tools. I wouldn’t go start a contracting business with them, but for moderate homeowner duty with an occasional bigger project, they’re a great value in my experience. I just bought this hedge trimmer and I love it. It’s powerful enough to do what I need, but light enough that I can do the whole front without resting. (That was my problem with my gas trimmer—it was heavy and made my forearms ache debilitatingly.) Definitely recommended. No connection other than being a satisfied customer.
- The NFL conference title games are both on Sunday. I had gotten used to Saturday and Sunday playoffs. For all I know they always do it like this and I just don’t remember. Hoping for Packers and/or Chiefs victories. If Super Bowl LV is Bucs-Bills, I’ll truly just be watching it for the commercials.
- The Alabama Human Trafficking Summit is virtual this year. Presenters include Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey and Shared Hope International Founder and President Linda Smith. Both are formidable human trafficking warriors and engaging speakers. Register here!
- I’ll be in Nashville for a day errand soon and plan to try Nashville hot chicken in its city of origin for the first time. Alas, most of the iconic places like Hattie B’s and Prince’s are known for long lines and waits nearly as much as for their chicken, and I’m not interested in that. Fortunately I know excellent Nashville-area foodie Delia Jo, who put together this survey a few months ago. I think I’m going to try Subculture.
