Thursday miscellanea #569

  • I have been burning a lot of discursive oil on social media concerning yesterday’s shameful events in Washington DC, and I just don’t have the motivation to write a post here about it. I made everything that I posted public on my Facebook page, and here is a link to my Twitter feed.
  • Congratulations to Devonta Smith for becoming Alabama’s third Heisman Trophy winner! What a tremendous player. Looking forward to enjoying him for years to come in the NFL. All the best!
  • I didn’t come anywhere close to finishing with the garage over the holidays, but I tore it wide open enough that it can’t be ignored. I’m enjoying the steady progress of giving it 30 minutes to an hour a day. (I’m also enjoying finding more things I’d lost.)
  • I am putting together a list—hopefully a long one—of healthy lunches. The priorities are solid nutrition—vitamins, minerals, fiber, and so forth—and a calorie count of no more than 600 or so. Macronutrient composition is not as important to me, though higher protein is better, and at least a little fat (for satiety) is a plus. Whatcha got?
  • A little Christmas money put me over the top to get a new scanner that will monitor digital trunked systems. I’m enjoying it—you can program it automatically right out of the box with just your ZIP code—but wow, there are so many features it will take me literally months to explore them all. (This is not a complaint.)
  • Now the football is slipping away. There are only games of elevated importance left, so quality is up, but quantity is way down. This is especially noticeable this year, as the COVID-19 pandemic did a good job of slinging games all over the calendar. Some weeks I watched football all seven days.
  • We’ve got a little racket about snow tonight, and a little more racket about snow on Monday. Probably nothing significant will happen, but I think it’s interesting that this is the third time I can remember there being winter weather forecast for a day on which Alabama plays in the national championship game. (I remember being thankful for it back when I was running Upward basketball at church, because it enabled me to cancel practice on a day when a lot of people wanted to cancel their own anyway.)
