Thursday miscellanea #557

  • I have missed you, dear reader. I have also missed the ability to write for pleasure, which is only beginning to return in little spurts. I’m not sure that tiptoeing back in with a Thursday miscellanea post counts as a full-throated resumption, but it felt right this morning. Thank you for being here with me.
  • I had to go into the office yesterday for the first time in five months. On the way home I had a bowl of pho for the first time in five months. It was divine.
  • (Related: Seems like the number of food photos in my feed increases 500% on fast day.)
  • The 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 is set for Sunday. It will be run without fans. Series and track owner Roger Penske wrote a special message addressing these unprecedented circumstances. IndyCar fans, I said at the time that Penske purchasing the series and IMS was a wonderful thing. That we are running this most iconic race at all this year is testimony to that fact. Our beloved racing series is in the best hands in the world.
  • I bought this office chair to replace my old one, which Nathan took with him to school. My initial impressions are quite positive. It’s highly and meaningfully adjustable, and seems well made. It took a month to get it, though.
  • I decided I would pay for The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, and The Dispatch, and I already had access to The Washington Post thanks to a thoughtful friend. I’m really enjoying the significantly increased quality of the news and opinion I’m consuming, but wow, the crosswords are eating me alive. I have to limit myself to 30 minutes a day, because I’ll stop reading actual books if I don’t.
  • We had a bag of frozen mixed vegetables of the sort we usually add to vegetable soup. I decided we’d have them last night with our dinner. I asked Aaron how he liked them, and he said “I’d like to have a big vat of this that we could just eat like cereal.” Wow. Noted, man. Noted.
  • I mentioned on Twitter a couple of weeks ago that my inclination in crisis is to write about it. The most compelling (and really, probably permanent) reason I can’t this time is that as hard as it’s hit me, it’s simply not my story to tell. Nevertheless, please keep praying. I don’t know where I’ll ultimately find my way back to, but today it’s a better place than two weeks ago. Thank you for your help, prayerful and otherwise.

  1. Good to see you back on here. I think you have thrown a Pho craving on me. I’m heading into the office tomorrow and think I’ll grab some for lunch. So weird to be going into the office so sporadically.

Hope you’re doing well as can be with whatever is going on.
