Thursday miscellanea #551

  • I never got the post written, but we were thrilled to take a break from our yard work on Saturday to watch the first manned spaceflight launch from American soil since 2011. Willfully jettisoning our ability to move people to and from orbit was a terrible thing to do. May we never be so short-sighted again.
  • Things look good for IndyCar to open its season on Saturday in Texas. We can’t wait.
  • We’ve had a couple of nights of protest in downtown Huntsville. Whether the Huntsville Police Department overreached in dispersing crowds is a matter of debate. I have heard from multiple trustworthy eyewitnesses that after dark last night, protesters were not as well-behaved as is being reported. I have also heard that the police acted unprovoked. Mostly I want all of this shit to be over. Sustained unrest need not be a precursor to meaningful reform.
  • We’re about to finish the first season of Line of Duty. I’m more impressed than Lea is. She’ll probably peel off. We’re also all enjoying Rust Valley Restorers, which reminds me of my father multiple times per episode.
  • I got to chuckling about floor console television sets the other day. Remember those? Well, if you miss yours, you can purchase furniture to replicate the experience with a modern television.
  • I purchased and watched The Great Santini last night. I was about 10 when I saw it the first time, and it really made an impression on me. I enjoyed seeing it as an adult (and a father). It remains beautiful and heartbreaking.
  • Aragon finally got me with a well-placed ad and a good sale price. I’ve been curious for a while.
