- The greatest auto racing series in the world is on the ground in Speedway, Indiana! The Grand Prix is Saturday. The Greatest Spectacle in Racing is two weeks from Sunday. I look forward to and enjoy the Indianapolis 500 more than any other single sporting event. If you’re not currently following IndyCar, this is a good year to jump in. NBC has the coverage for the 500 for the first time, and all indications are that the telecast will be lights-out fantastic.
- At the monthly North Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force meeting on Tuesday, I saw a marvelous anti-human trafficking film that was professionally produced in Alabama. I’m waiting for the green light to publicize it.
- Had another wonderful time at WhistleStop last weekend judging barbecue (and got to hang with Alex again). I inadvertently violated the rules last year by posting a photo of one of my judging plates, even though no identifying information was visible. I kept it tight and vague this year.
- My old stomping ground of Anniston has been named the most dangerous military town in America. It also contains the ninth- and eleventh-most dangerous neighborhoods in the United States. There are barely 20,000 people in Anniston. How depressing.
- Disney has announced plans for new Star Wars movies to land in December 2022, 2024, and 2026. No word whether these are a new trilogy, standalone films, or something else. Apparently there are also plans for four Avatar sequels, in ’21, ’23, ’25, and ’27. I guess there are people clamoring for these somewhere? I remember the first film’s stunning visuals, but I also remember significantly unrealized narrative potential. Maybe these will be better in that regard.
- Remember Jim on Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom? Marlon Perkins would be in the tent talking to you, and Jim would be out wrestling the angry polar bear? Jim died yesterday. RIP.
- We have new restaurants opening all the time, and I have a few #hsvhotwings places on deck. I’m always looking for more, and I’m also expanding restaurant reviews on BoWilliams.com in general. Let me know if you know of somewhere I need to eat!
