Thursday miscellanea #493

• We have one confirmed case of influenza at our house. He’s definitely sick, but the vaccine he got seems to moderating it. We’re Tamifluing him too. Fingers crossed for a quick recovery (and no more cases under my roof).
• I did not watch the State of the Union address. The last SOTU I can remember seeing was delivered by George H.W. Bush. It’s become a ridiculous spectacle, when it should be a rather ordinary event. I can’t see ever watching another one, frankly. Whether I like the president has nothing to do with it.
• I’m about 75% of the way through The Americans. This is not a great show, but it’s very good. It builds tension well, and two or three uses of period (’80s) music have been spectacular.
• Had my first Schlotzsky’s sandwich in perhaps a decade recently. It was fine. I ate it. But more and more, I’m thinking the only chain cold cuts that are worth it are at Firehouse.
• Lizzy Borden put out an album last year that I missed until this week. My Midnight Things is excellent, with a little whiff of grandiosity on it like Master of Disguise. I am loving the record.
• So I guess the Alliance of American Football starts this weekend, a year ahead of the rebooted XFL. I’ll check it out. Needs a nickname. Not sure AAF works, but the whole name is unwieldy in a way that even National Football League isn’t.
• I’ll be attending my second Alabama Human Trafficking Summit tomorrow. This is such a huge, dark topic, and I think I was a little overwhelmed last year. I’m looking forward to taking a little more seasoning into the sessions tomorrow as I continue to think about how I can make a bigger impact.
