“It is Christ Himself, not the Bible, who is the true word of God. The Bible, read in the right spirit and with the guidance of good teachers, will bring us to Him. We must not use the Bible as a sort of encyclopedia out of which texts can be taken for use as weapons.” – C.S. Lewis
I haven’t read enough C.S. Lewis. He wrote an enormous pile of nonfiction, and he also wrote a lot of fiction that wasn’t set in Narnia. Nearly every time I read a quote of his, I think “that’s a guy who had it figured out.”
I don’t care for weaponized Scripture, mostly because I’ve never seen any evidence that such an approach is consistent with the way Jesus did things. Jesus did wag His finger and admonish from time to time, but generally at people inside the church. And His admonishments tended to be for things that divided, not united; that excluded, not included.
You know, things like weaponizing Scripture.
