Manziel slighted, nudged to 22nd in NFL draft; does money fingers anyway

Johnny Manziel was indeed the story in the first round of the NFL draft last night, but not like he wanted.

By quarter to nine he’d devolved into everyone’s punchline, peering out from over a ridiculously huge Windsor-knotted tie and pretending it was all going according to plan.

The reality was a new Twitter poll every three minutes, commenting in some way or another on his emergent wallflower status.

So then he finally went 22nd, and treated his audience to an obviously well-rehearsed double money fingers gesture. Nice, man. Whatever. I saw a guy wearing a cowboy hat driving a Honda Civic once, too.

Good luck, Johnny Football. I don’t think anyone’s expecting much of you behaviorally, so it’s a low bar to get over to look like you’ve matured a great deal.

That’s probably something you shouldn’t squander.

  1. Poor baby. Diddums get passed over?

I hope the kid grows up a little. I hope no one’s going to coddle him and perpetuate this star complex thing.

I also hope someone knocks him on his butt, but I’m evil like that.

    • I don’t know whether he is where/who he is largely because of his father, but at the very least he’s been unhelpful. This article (take the time; it’s worth it) was the first one that really made me think in that direction. His father is equal parts fascinated and bewildered by him. That’s not a position from which you can instill discipline.

“Johnny, you’re a very talented football player, and it’s probably going to make you a lot of money. But there are still rules you have to play by, sport.”

He’s never heard anything remotely like that in his entire life. Of that I am certain.
