Thursday miscellanea #204

  • Just got the Kiss remaster Destroyer – Resurrected last night.  It’s producer Bob Ezrin’s doing.  I had a good time listening to it straight through with Aaron.  If you’ve been listening to Destroyer all your life like I have, you’ll hear differences, but there’s really nothing dramatic except the new guitar work on “Sweet Pain.”  There is a nice combination of original liner notes and new material from Ezrin.  Not a must-have, but for nine bucks delivered, I have no complaints.
  • Lea just walked out of here joking me about eventual orthodontic bills.  I think that’s about as funny as amoebic dysentery.
  • Something that really meant a lot to me once was playing an online word game called Acrophobia, on bezerk.com, in 1997-98.  It was an exceptionally well-finished experience, even on dial-up (remember X2 vs. K56flex?), and I had “buddies” I’d “see” every night there.  Still keep up with a couple, actually.
  • I decided to finish From a Buick 8.  It redeemed itself somewhat, but I still think this is the last Stephen King I’m reading cold for a while.
  • Ate at The Tavern with ‘seester on Tuesday.  It was a tasty club sandwich and cole slaw.  Service was excellent.  I ate in this room twice when it was Ketchup, and both of those visits have been eclipsed with this one.
  • I think the kids are getting tablets for Christmas.  The shopping’s getting easier, but the bills are getting bigger.  I guess that’s growing up in a nutshell, isn’t it?
  • I had lunch recently with someone who can at this point, I think, be reasonably described as an old friend.  I am far sadder for his situation than I let on.  Dude, I know you’re reading.  Be quiet, and still, and listen to your heart.

  1. Which tablets are you considering? I have a Nexus 7 and am nothing but pleased with it. It’s a lot more enjoyable if you have a phone or hotspot to keep it daisy chained to, giving it full time internet access. Definitely a strong “bang-for-buck” choice.

I’m still pretty sure the Kindle Fire (which there’s a bunch of new Kindles out now) is a pretty good choice too. I haven’t had time to really sit down and read and understand all of the new models and prices to evaluate bang for buck, but I’m pretty sure there’s at least one or two models worth considering.

I’m not pretty convinced that an iPad (as of this posting) is not worth it. To be clear, I’m not an Apple hater. I’ve had 2 different model iPhones and plan on pre-ordering the latest and greatest iPhone tomorrow. I’ve just come to feel that the iOS really shines for simple, quick tasks on something with a smaller amount of screen real estate. Android is a bit more flexible, a bit more complex, but takes advantage of the large screens on tablets a little better IMO. And now there are very reasonably priced Android devices out there to put the cherry on top of that cake.

My take is that an iPhone/Android tablet combo gives me the best of both worlds with the flexibility to always understand the latest and greatest thing going on in either realm.

Bo, if you’re ever interested in checking out my Nexus 7, you know where I sit.

    Happy shopping!

  2. Tahm, if I were doing it today I’d get two Nexus 7s without thinking about it. Thanks for the offer of a look. I’ll take you up on that. I have two Android tablets myself, but I’ll probably be getting a Surface when they’re available. Unless Apple changes their business model substantially, I’ll never have an Apple anything. I do have an old Mac Cube running a cool screen saver on my bookshelf just as a gewgaw.

Terri, I haven’t, but I know the premise. I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks.

Jenny, we don’t know that we’ll have orthodontic bills, but I’d love to avoid them!
